How to Set Up Variant-Based Build-a-Box Bundles
5 min readIntroduction
BYOB, Variant-Based Bundle lets merchants create a build-a-box style bundle where customers select only from predefined variants and quantities the merchant has set, rather than choosing freely across an open product set. This keeps product selection controlled while still giving customers some choice within the boundaries you define.
Why It Matters
Variant-based bundles help merchants maintain inventory control and reduce order errors, since customers can only select approved variants at fixed, merchant-defined pricing and limits. This supports predictable fulfillment and pricing compared to a fully open selection format.
How to Set Up a Variant-Based Bundle
Step 1: Access the Bundle Feature
- Log in to the Shopify admin dashboard.
- Open the Easy Subscriptions app.
- Click Features.
- Select Bundle.
Step 2: Create the Bundle
- Click Create Bundle.
- Choose Build Your Own Box.
- Select Bundle with Variants.
Step 3: Name the Bundle and Define Options
- Enter the Bundle Name.
- Under Variants, enter an Option Name, such as Size or Color.
- Enter the Option Value or values you want customers to be able to choose from. Customers will only see these predefined options, not your full product’s variant range.
Step 4: Set Pricing and Limits Per Variant
For each variant you add, configure:
- Variant name
- Price
- Product choose limit → The maximum number of times this specific variant can be selected.
Since price and choice limit are set individually per variant, different variants within the same bundle can carry different prices and different selection caps.
Step 5: Select Bundle Products
Under Bundle Products, select the products with options, such as size or color, that customers will choose from. The interface shows a running count of selected variants as you build the list.
Step 6: Set Inventory Tracking
Under Inventory Quantities, choose which location tracks stock:
- Shop location → The default.
- Select location → Choose a specific location if inventory should be tracked elsewhere.
Step 7: Configure Additional Settings
- Bundle Tags (optional) → Comma separated tags for internal or storefront organization.
- Shipping Profiles → Select the shipping profile that applies to this bundle. This is a store-level shipping profile setting, not a specific shipping address.
- Max Choose Limit for a Single Variant → A general choose limit setting alongside the per-variant Product Choose Limit fields set in Step 4. If both are configured, confirm with support which one takes precedence for a given variant.
- Product Card Settings:
- Product description modal for storefront
- Enable product image slider
- Show product or variant price
- Bundle Settings:
- Mark bundles as sold out when bundled items are sold out or low inventory
- Bundle Cross-sells → Select a collection to surface as cross-sell suggestions, or leave as No Collection.
Step 8: Review and Save
Review all option values, per-variant pricing and limits, and settings carefully, then save the bundle.
Best Practice
- Review all option values carefully before saving, since customers can only choose from what you’ve explicitly added here.
- Confirm selected variants match your actual available inventory before publishing.
- Use clear, consistent option and variant naming so customers aren’t confused about what they’re selecting.
- Double check whether Max Choose Limit for a Single Variant and each variant’s individual Product Choose Limit are meant to work together or independently, and confirm with support if the relationship isn’t clear for your setup.
Notes

Frequently Asked Questions
In a Variant-Based Bundle, each variant carries its own individually set price. A standard Build Your Own Box instead uses either one fixed Bundle Price for the whole selection or a Products-Based percentage discount, rather than per-variant pricing.
Product Choose Limit is set individually for each variant in Step 4. Max Choose Limit for a Single Variant is a separate, general setting later in the configuration. This help center doesn’t yet clarify how the two interact when both are set; confirm with support before relying on both together.
Only the specific Option Values you define. Customers cannot select variants outside the predefined list you’ve configured for the bundle.
Yes, using the same Mark Bundles as Sold Out setting available on other bundle types, reflecting component stock issues at the bundle level.
Yes, using Bundle Cross-sells to select a collection of related products to surface alongside the bundle.
