How to Configure a Multi-Step Build-a-Box Bundle

6 min read

Introduction

Dynamic Bundle Standard lets merchants offer flexible product bundles. Choose between Fixed Bundles, with predefined products and pricing the customer cannot change, or Build Your Own Box, where customers select products themselves based on rules the merchant configures, including step based selection, quantity or price limits, and pricing control.

Why It Matters

Build Your Own Box lets merchants offer a personalized bundle experience, increasing average order value while keeping control over which products are selectable, how many can be chosen, and how the final price is calculated. It suits both subscription and one-time bundles that need flexibility without requiring manual order handling.

How to Configure Build Your Own Box

Step 1: Access the Feature

  1. Log in to the Shopify admin dashboard.
  2. Open the Easy Subscriptions app.
  3. Click Features.
  4. Select Bundle.
  5. Choose Build Your Own Box.

Step 2: Name the Bundle

Enter the Bundle Name.

Step 3: Configure a Step

Each step defines one stage of product selection the customer moves through. For each step, configure:

  • Step name → Internal reference name for the step.
  • Step title → Displayed to customers on the storefront.
  • Step description → Explains what the customer is choosing at this stage.
  • Step icon → Upload a file, or paste a URL, for an icon representing the step.
  • Limit type → Choose Quantity, Price, or Both, to control how selection is capped.
    • If Quantity or Both is selected, set a Min Quantity and Max Quantity for the step.
  • Step products → Add the specific products available for selection within this step.

Step 4: Set Inventory Tracking

Under Inventory Quantities, choose which location tracks stock:

  • Shop location → The default.
  • Select location → Choose a specific location if inventory should be tracked elsewhere.

Step 5: Set Bundle Pricing

Two pricing approaches are available:

  • Bundle Price → A fixed price for the complete bundle selection. This applies when the bundle does not contain variants.
  • Products-Based Price → Instead of one fixed price, the customer receives a percentage off the total price calculated from whichever products they actually select. Use this when the final price should scale with what the customer chooses, rather than staying fixed regardless of selection.

Choose the pricing approach that fits your bundle: a fixed Bundle Price works well when selections are roughly equivalent in value, while Products-Based Price fits boxes where selected products can vary significantly in price.

Step 6: Configure Additional Settings

  • Bundle Tags (optional) → Comma separated tags for internal or storefront organization.
  • Shipping Profiles → Select the shipping profile that applies to this bundle.
  • Max Choose Limit for a Single Variant → Restrict how many times a customer can select the same variant within the bundle.
  • Product Card Settings:
    • Product description modal for storefront → Lets customers view product descriptions from within the bundle builder.
    • Enable product image slider → Displays multiple product images in a slider on each product card.
    • Show product or variant price → Displays individual pricing on each product card during selection.
  • Bundle Settings:
    • Mark bundles as sold out when bundled items are sold out or low inventory → Reflects component stock issues at the bundle level automatically.
  • Bundle Cross-sells → Select a collection to surface as cross-sell suggestions alongside this bundle. Set to No Collection if you don’t want cross-sells shown.

Step 7: Add More Steps (Optional)

Click to add additional steps if the bundle requires multiple selection stages, and configure each new step the same way as Step 3.

Step 8: Review and Save

Review each step’s products, limits, and pricing, then save the bundle.

Best Practice

  • Review product assignments carefully for every step before saving, since customers will be selecting directly from what you’ve configured.
  • Set clear minimum and maximum limits per step to avoid customer confusion about how many items they need to choose.
  • Choose your pricing approach deliberately: a fixed Bundle Price keeps costs predictable for you, while Products-Based Price ties revenue more closely to what customers actually select.
  • Test the bundle on the storefront to confirm the step flow, limits, and pricing behave as expected before publishing.
  • Use Bundle Cross-sells to surface complementary products without cluttering the core step-based selection flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Bundle Price and Products-Based Price?

Bundle Price sets one fixed price for the entire bundle regardless of which eligible products the customer picks. Products-Based Price instead applies a percentage discount to the actual total of whatever products the customer selects, so the final price scales with their choices.

What does Limit Type control at the step level?

Whether a step restricts selection by Quantity, by Price, or by Both. Quantity based limits use a Min and Max quantity; a Price based limit instead caps how much value can be selected within that step.

Can I have more than one selection step in a single bundle?

Yes. Use Add More Steps to build a bundle with multiple sequential selection stages, each with its own products, limits, and display details.

Does Build Your Own Box support marking the bundle as sold out automatically?

Yes, using the same Mark Bundles as Sold Out setting available on Fixed Bundles, which reflects component stock issues at the bundle level.

Can I restrict how many times a customer picks the same variant?

Yes, using Max Choose Limit for a Single Variant, independent of the overall step quantity or price limits.

What does Bundle Cross-sells actually do?

It lets you select a collection whose products are surfaced as cross-sell suggestions alongside the Build Your Own Box bundle, giving customers additional relevant options beyond what’s in the bundle steps themselves.
