How to Set Up Upsell Rules for Subscription Plans in Easy Subscriptions
5 min readIntroduction
Upsell and Cross-sell in Easy Subscriptions lets merchants recommend subscription based products at two points in the buying journey: on the product page, during checkout, or both at once, configured from the same setup screen. This supports converting one time buyers into subscribers and encouraging existing subscribers to add relevant products, without building separate rules for each placement.
Why It Matters
Upsells guide customers toward subscription purchases and additional relevant products at the moments purchase intent is highest, either while they are deciding how to buy or right as they check out. This supports recurring revenue growth by encouraging longer term commitments instead of one time purchases, without interrupting the core buying flow.
How to Set Up an Upsell
Step 1: Access the Feature
- Log in to the Shopify admin portal.
- Navigate to Easy Subscriptions.
- Select Features.
- Click Upsell and Cross-sell.
- Click Create Upsell.
Step 2: Configure the Upsell
Fill in the following fields on the Create Upsell screen:
| Field | What It Does |
| Upsell name | An internal name for this upsell rule, for your own reference. |
| Select subscription plan | The specific subscription plan this upsell rule applies to, chosen from your existing plans. |
| Enable upsell suggestions for following subscription products | Choose All products to apply the rule broadly, or Specific products to limit it to selected items. |
| Upsell type | Choose Product Page, Post Checkout, or Both, depending on where you want the upsell to appear. |
| Offer discount | Optional. Add a discount to incentivize the upsell product. |
| Please select the upsell products | Choose which product or products are offered as the upsell. |
Step 3: Save the Upsell
Review your selections, then click Submit to save the upsell rule.
How It Appears in the Store
What the customer sees depends on the Upsell Type you selected.
If Upsell Type is Product Page:
- When a customer selects Subscribe and Save, the configured upsell product is displayed.
- When a customer selects Regular Purchase, a pop-up appears suggesting the subscription option instead.
If Upsell Type is Post Checkout:
- Customers who chose Subscribe and Save see the option to add the configured upsell product during checkout.
- Customers who chose Regular Purchase are prompted at checkout with the option to switch to a subscription.
If Upsell Type is Both:
- The product page behavior and the post checkout behavior both apply, giving the customer two separate opportunities to see the offer.
Best Practice
- Choose upsell products that closely match the original product, since relevance drives acceptance more than the offer itself.
- Use Product Page upsells to influence the purchase decision itself, and Post Checkout upsells to convert intent that’s already high without interrupting the original purchase.
- Reserve Post Checkout upsells for subscription only products when the goal is specifically converting one time buyers into subscribers.
- Add upsell details carefully, since an incorrect plan or product selection will surface the wrong recommendation to customers.
- Review upsell performance regularly and adjust the discount, product selection, or placement based on what’s actually converting.
