How to Change the Price of a Product in a Subscription Contract
4 min readIntroduction
The Change Price feature lets merchants update the price of a subscription product after an order has already been placed, applying that new price to future recurring orders on the subscription. This is typically used for contractual pricing updates, correcting a pricing error, or a special merchant approved change.
Easy Subscriptions groups several related edits under the same three-dot menu on a product within an order:
- Change Price updates the billing amount for a product going forward.
- Change Quantity updates how many units of that product are included.
- Product Swapping replaces the product with a different one entirely.
- Adding or Removing Products changes which products are included on the order at all.
Why It Matters
Updating product price ensures future subscription orders reflect the correct billing amount without needing to cancel and recreate the subscription, which reduces operational overhead and avoids disrupting the customer’s existing billing history.
Since a price change affects what a customer is charged going forward, many regions have consumer protection rules around advance notice for subscription price increases. Check what applies in your market before applying a price change that affects existing subscribers, since requirements vary by jurisdiction.
How to Change the Product Price
Step 1: Access the Shopify Admin
- Log in to the Shopify admin portal.
- Navigate to the Easy Subscriptions app.
- Click Subscription to open the subscription list.
Step 2: Select the Subscription Order
- Locate the subscription order you want to update.
- Click on the order to open the subscription details page.
Step 3: Edit the Product Price
- Locate the product within the subscription.
- Click the three-dot menu next to the product.
- Select Edit Product.
- Update the product price as required.
- Click Save to apply the changes.
The updated price applies to future recurring orders for the selected subscription, not to orders already processed.
Best Practice
- Review the subscription details before saving to confirm the correct product and price are being updated.
- Inform the customer in advance if the price change affects their upcoming billing, both as good practice and to stay aligned with consumer protection requirements that may apply in your region.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. The updated price applies to future recurring orders only, not to orders that have already been billed.
Best practice is to notify customers in advance of a price change. Depending on your region, this may also be a legal requirement for subscription businesses, so check what applies in your market.
Change Price updates the billing amount for a product. Change Quantity updates how many units of that product are included. Both are edited from the same three-dot menu but affect different fields.
Change Price adjusts the cost of the existing product. Product Swapping replaces that product with a different one, which would carry its own price rather than an edited version of the original.
This process updates the price on that specific subscription order. It does not change the product’s price for other customers or the product’s storefront listing.
