How to Configure Customer Portal Permissions in Easy Subscriptions
6 min readIntroduction
Customer Portal permissions determine what subscribers can do for themselves from their own account, versus what requires contacting the merchant. Every permission below is managed from the same settings screen and follows the same basic pattern: enable the toggle, configure any sub-options it offers, and save.
Why It Matters
Giving customers structured self-service control reduces support requests for routine subscription changes, lets customers adjust their subscriptions to fit their own needs, and keeps merchants from having to manually process changes that customers are capable of making themselves. Enabling the right permissions for your business model is a balance between customer flexibility and keeping enough control over fulfillment and billing.
How to Access Customer Portal Settings
- Log in to the Shopify admin portal.
- Navigate to Apps and open Easy Subscriptions.
- Click Features.
- Select Customer Portal.
Each permission below is toggled on or off from this screen, with additional configuration options appearing for permissions that support them.
Customer Portal Permissions
Pause and Resume Subscriptions
Lets customers pause an active subscription and resume it later, entirely on their own from the Customer Portal, without needing merchant intervention.
Subscription Cancellation
Lets customers cancel their own subscription. When enabled, choose which condition controls when the cancel button appears:
- Cancel immediately → The cancel option is available right away.
- After number of orders → The cancel option becomes available only once a specified number of orders have been completed.
- After number of days → The cancel option becomes available only after a specified number of days have passed.
Subscription Frequency Update
Lets customers change their own delivery frequency, such as switching from monthly to weekly, from the Customer Portal.
Skip Next Order
Lets customers skip their single next upcoming order on their own. The order is not processed or shipped, and the subscription continues on schedule afterward.
Reschedule Next Order
Lets customers move the date of their next upcoming order only. This affects a single order, not the subscription’s ongoing schedule.
Reschedule Upcoming Orders
Lets customers adjust the delivery dates of all their future shipments, rather than just the next one. This is a separate, broader permission from Reschedule Next Order, and the two can be enabled independently of each other.
Update Order Note During Product Swapping
Lets customers add or update an order note while swapping a product in their active subscription, so delivery instructions or preferences tied to the new product are captured at the same time as the swap.
Manage Products
Lets subscribers add or remove products from their active subscription directly, without merchant involvement.
Manage Product Quantity
Lets subscribers update the quantity of products on their subscription directly from the Customer Portal.
Subscription Swap
Controls when customers are allowed to swap subscription products, separately from which products are eligible for swapping. Options include:
- Always → Customers can swap at any time.
- Restrict swaps according to days → Swapping is limited to specific days, giving merchants more control over fulfillment timing.
Update Shipping Address
Lets customers update the shipping address for each of their subscription contracts individually, directly from the Customer Portal.
Auto-Sync Shipping Rates
Controls how shipping charges are calculated for recurring subscription orders:
- Use original shipping charge from initial order → The shipping rate set at signup carries forward for every recurring order.
- Recalculate shipping based on current order value → Shipping is recalculated for each recurring order based on its current value.
Announcement Bar
A configurable banner displayed within the Customer Portal, with its own Title and Description fields. This isn’t a customer action permission like the others; it’s a way to communicate information directly to customers browsing their portal, such as a policy update or a seasonal note.
Best Practice
- Enable only the permissions that fit your fulfillment and business model. More self-service options aren’t automatically better if your operations can’t support the flexibility.
- Pay close attention to Reschedule Next Order versus Reschedule Upcoming Orders, since they control different scopes and are easy to mix up when configuring.
- If you enable Subscription Cancellation, choose a condition (immediate, order count, or day count) that matches the terms you’ve actually communicated to customers.
- Use the Restrict Swaps According to Days option on Subscription Swap if uncontrolled swap timing would create fulfillment issues.
- Use the Announcement Bar for time-sensitive updates customers should see before making changes to their subscription.
- Review enabled permissions periodically, since a permission that made sense at launch may need adjusting as your subscription program grows.
