How to Configure a Subscription Group with Bundles and Dynamic Swap Rules

Introduction

Bundled Subscription Group is a specific plan type built around a bundle preset you’ve already created, rather than a single product or open collection. It supports its own Swapping and Fall Back configuration to manage product flexibility within the bundled subscription, and can optionally convert into a series subscription where the bundle updates automatically as the series progresses.

Most of the core plan fields, plan name, subscription type, delivery frequency, discounts, trial, display content, and auto-cancel, work the same way here as they do on a standard subscription plan. This article focuses on what’s specific to the Bundle Product Group type; for the shared fields, see the general Subscription Plan Configuration guide.

Why It Matters

Bundled Subscription Groups help merchants manage more complex subscription offerings built from a fixed set of products, supporting controlled swaps and fallback configurations while keeping the underlying bundle’s integrity intact across every billing cycle.

How to Create a Bundled Subscription Group

Step 1: Access Easy Subscriptions

1. Log in to the Shopify admin portal.
2. Navigate to Easy Subscriptions.
3. Click Subscription Plans.

Step 2: Start a New Plan

1. Click Create Plan.
2. Enter the Plan Name and Internal Description.
3. Choose the Subscription Type, One-time + Subscription or Subscription Only.

Step 3: Select Bundle Product Group as the Group Type

Locate the Group Type section and select Bundle Product Group. This changes the products section to Manage Subscription Bundles instead of the standard product or collection picker.

Step 4: Add the Bundle

1. Click Manage Subscription Bundle.
2. Select Add Products from the right side.
3. Choose the bundle preset you previously created under Bundle Presets.

Step 5: Configure Swapping

1. Add products with the same total quantity as defined in the selected bundle, matching the bundle preset’s limit exactly.
2. Select a Start Date and End Date defining the window during which swapping is available for this subscription group.

Swapping quantities must match the bundle’s defined limit exactly; mismatched quantities will not process correctly.

Step 6: Configure Fall Back

1. Add fallback products as needed.
2. Fallback products can have a lower quantity than the original bundle.
3. Fallback is used automatically when the originally bundled items are unavailable and a swap doesn’t apply.

Step 7: Configure Frequency, Discounts, and Advanced Settings

Set up Subscription Frequencies, Offer Discount or Offer Sequence Discount, and Advanced Settings, including Offer Trial, Display Contents, Schedule Recurring Order, Auto Cancel Subscription, and Customer Tag, the same way you would on a standard subscription plan.

Step 8: Optionally Enable Series Subscription

Enabling Series Subscription converts the plan into a series, and the fixed bundle updates automatically according to your series configuration. Once enabled, two additional fields appear:

• Type of series → Order Based or Time Based.
• Number of series → The total count in the sequence, along with when the series starts, such as on the 1st billing.

Series behavior for a bundled group works the same way as it does for a standalone Time Based or Order Based series subscription, except that each step in the series can update the bundle’s contents automatically rather than a single product.

Step 9: Review and Save

Review all configured sections, including the bundle, swapping, fallback, and any series settings, then save the plan.

How This Differs From a Standard Subscription Plan

A Bundle Product Group plan does not show several fields present on a standard plan, including Prepaid Subscription Plans, Required Quantity, Gift Product, and the generic Products for Swapping and Fallback Item fields. Bundle groups use their own Swapping and Fall Back configuration instead, tied directly to the selected bundle preset rather than to individually selected products.

Note that this plan-level Swapping configuration, with its Start Date and End Date, controls when swapping is available for the subscription group as a whole. This is a separate setting from the Customer Portal’s Subscription Swap permission, which controls whether customers can swap always or only on restricted days once swapping is already available. Confirm with support how these two settings interact if you have both configured.

Best Practice

• Finalize your bundle preset before creating the subscription plan, since the plan depends on selecting an existing preset.
• Match product quantities exactly for Swapping, since quantities that don’t equal the bundle’s defined limit will not process correctly.
• Review the Swapping start and end dates carefully, since swapping won’t be available to customers outside that window regardless of other swap related settings.
• If enabling Series Subscription, confirm whether Order Based or Time Based fits your bundle’s intended cadence before saving.
