Setting Up Swappable Products in a Subscription Plan

Introduction #

Product Swapping allows merchants to enable alternative product selection within an active subscription.

This feature supports operational continuity when a subscribed product is unavailable and provides flexibility for customers to change products after order placement.

 

Why It Matters #

Product Swapping reduces subscription cancellations caused by stock unavailability.

It also improves customer experience by allowing controlled product changes within an existing subscription contract.

 

 

How to Use Product Swapping #

Enable Product Swapping in a Subscription Plan #

  • Go to the Shopify Admin dashboard.

  • Open the Easy Subscription app.

  • Create a new Subscription Plan or edit an existing one.

  • Complete the standard subscription setup steps.

  • Locate the Products for swapping option on the right panel.

  • Select the products that can be used for swapping.

  • Click Save to apply the configuration.

Customer Product Swapping After Order Placement #

 

  • The customer must place the subscription order first.

  • A reference ID is generated after the order is placed.

  • The customer logs in to the Customer Portal using the reference ID.

  • The customer selects an available swapping product based on the configured options.

  • The subscription updates with the selected product.

Merchant-Initiated Product Swap #

 

  • Merchants can guide customers to swap products if the subscribed item is out of stock.

  • Only products configured in the Product Swapping section are available for selection.

Best Practice #

  • Always configure multiple swapping products to avoid service disruption.

  • Ensure swapping products are operationally equivalent in pricing and fulfillment.

  • Review stock availability regularly to minimize forced swaps.

  • Clearly communicate swapping availability on the product page.

Notes #

  • Product swapping is available only after an order is placed.

  • Customers must log in to the portal to perform a product swap.

  • Swapping is limited to products preconfigured in the subscription plan.
